The Late Shows, Friday 13 - Saturday 14 May 2011

The Late Shows 2011 has been the most successful yet

Final figures confirm that The Late Shows 2011 was biggest and most successful to date, with more than 24,000 visits to almost 50 cultural venues across NewcastleGateshead.

The two-day event, now in its fifth year took place on 13-14 May and encouraged nocturnal culture-lovers to join in with unique after dark activities from 7pm until late into the night.

On Friday 13 May, an evening of special events exclusively in the Ouseburn Valley provided the warm-up to The Late Shows weekend with over 5,500 visits to popular venues throughout the night.

The main event took place on Saturday 14 May and with all of The Late Shows venues staying open after-hours, thousands of lively revellers could be seen across NewcastleGateshead wearing the coveted yellow Late Shows glowsticks.

Bill Griffiths, project manager, says:

“The response to The Late Shows 2011 has been fantastic. The cultural venues that took part received an incredible 24,000 visits throughout the weekend, which is a 20 per cent increase on last year.”

Highlights from the event included a spectacular stilt-walking and fire-breathing display outside the Laing Art Gallery, a stunning performance by the elephants from Dodgy Clutch at Mushroom Works and Sentinel, a striking audio-visual installation that transformed the inside of the Tyne Bridge Tower.

Over in Gateshead, The Shed was bustling with people dancing the Charleston as part of the silent movie extravaganza and visitors to the Shipley Art Gallery could be seen wearing special hand-made hats from the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

The Late Shows 2012 will take place at cultural venues across NewcastleGateshead on 18 and 19 May.
